SIMEC ATLANTIS ENERGY LIMITED (“Atlantis”, the “Company” or the “Group”)
Opening of a New Office in Nagasaki, Japan
SIMEC Atlantis Energy Limited, the global developer, owner and operator of sustainable energy projects, is delighted to announce the opening of its first office in Nagasaki, Japan. This is the second office the Company has opened in Asia and will compliment Atlantis’ existing presence in Singapore.
The primary function of the new entity, which is called Atlantis Operations Japan (AOJ), will be to manage the construction works that are to be carried out under Atlantis’ EPC contract with Kyuden Mirai Energy (“KME”). Under this contract Atlantis and AOJ will supply a 500kW tidal turbine and deliver all onshore and offshore construction works. The office also gives Atlantis a base from which to build out further tidal power capacity across the prefecture of Nagasaki.
The office could also provide a base for our combustion technical staff when they travel to Japan to witness large scale combustion testing being carried out for the Uskmouth Power Station conversion project. We announced in September 2019, that we awarded Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH (“MHPS Europe”) the contract to carry out the design and development of the combustion system for our flagship Uskmouth Power Station conversion project. Headquartered in Yokohama, Japan MHPS Europe (a joint venture company between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Hitachi) have large industrial scale test rigs in Nagasaki which will be used to conduct industrial scale fuel burn tests next year.
Tim Cornelius, CEO of SIMEC Atlantis Energy, commented:
“This is an important step in the continuing growth of the Atlantis Group into new and expanding Asian markets. We will be exporting Scottish tidal technology and expertise to Japan as well as importing Japanese combustion technology into the UK. This is cross-border technology transfer that will aid the energy transition and is a fantastic example for how governments, both national and local, can work together to achieve zero net carbon targets whilst at the same time creating local, long term, sustainable employment.
Asia is a virtually untapped market for tidal power, with huge potential for hydro expansion and a desperate need for non-recyclable waste solutions to prevent further man-made environmental damage. Our portfolio of companies can provide technical solutions and expertise and setting up bureaus in key markets such as Japan demonstrates how dedicated we are to building long terms strategic relationships with companies such as KME and MHPS.”
